Swap shops
What is a swap shop?
Community swap shops or swap events are when people exchange items they no longer use for items they need. Whether it’s furniture, clothing, or household goods, this provides a platform for swapping, reducing the need for new purchases, and minimising waste. Without any money changing hands, it is a win for both parties. You get something new, and your preloved items get a second life. What's not to love?!
Swap events can be themed, perhaps Christmas jumpers, Halloween costumes or can be seasonal to suit what is needed and when.

How to set up a swap shop
Before you get started we recommend you consider the following:
Choose an accessible venue suitable to your audience. Ensure there is enough space to display and store goods and to allow people to move around comfortably.
To make your swap shop a success you need to set certain guidelines or rules to give people a clear idea of what to expect and what items to bring.
For example, consider:
- The condition/quality of items accepted.
- What types of items can be brought along, perhaps a theme like Halloween or a season.
- If your swap shop includes clothing, ensure you have a changing area to try on things.
How big is the event, how many volunteers would you need, would you need access to the venue the night before for dropping off items?
Consider if you need
- Display tables
- Rails and hangers
- How you are going to organise your items: by size, colour, category?
- Refreshments
- Timings
- Mirrors
Also make sure you have adequate insurance in place.

It is important to consider what to do with the leftover items. Building rapport with a local charity shop to supply leftover stock is advisable. If any items require recycling, have a plan in place to do this properly.
A high street swap shop
R:evolve Recycle in Rutherglen is a high street boutique who offers a swap shop to customers. Customers swap unwanted clothes, shoes and accessories for something "new" completely free of charge through a points based system.
The swap shop helps to reduce fast fashion and textile waste by enabling people to think differently about their clothes; seeing value in what they already own, and sharing it with their community. This ensures second hand isn't second best.
