How we reduce waste?

Let's talk about waste - or rather how we can avoid it

There’s a carbon cost to every purchase. When we waste less there is a reduction in the purchase’s climate impact. Through buying less and reusing, repairing, and repurposing more you’ll not only save money, you’ll help to reduce emissions too.

Everything we touch has a lifespan. From the clothes we wear, to the food we cook and the cups we drink from. Making small day-to-day changes to create less waste will support our move to a more sustainable lifestyle.

Let’s look at a pair of jeans, most of us own at least one pair in our lifetime!

Linear versus circular

In a linear economy, which many of us can profess to, we take resources, use them and then throw them away.

A circular economy is a different way of thinking about how we look after our belongings, in a way that does not harm the environment, extends a product's lifespan and reduces waste.

Every stage of a product's life cycle emits carbon, from the energy needed to extract raw materials to produce the product, to the transport of products to retailers and then consumers. All these emissions contribute to climate change.

In a circular economy, we keep products in use for as long as possible to expand their lifetime, we make conscious decisions along the way.

We decide if we really need the item, we reuse it again and again or share it with someone else. If it breaks, we repair or mend it. If it is no longer fit for the original purpose, we make it into something else and finally we recycle it correctly.

How circular do you think you are?

Our friends at Zero Waste Scotland have created a quiz to test just how circular you are.
