Other composting methods
Not all composting has to happen in a bay or a bin. Many growers — at home and in community spaces — also use alternative methods that are brilliantly simple, space-saving, or perfect for specific types of organic waste. Wormeries, bokashi, and leaf mould systems each offer unique benefits and can complement your main composting set-up. These approaches are often championed by organisations like Garden Organic, Zero Waste Scotland, and Generation Soil, which promote diverse, soil-building practices suitable for every space and skill level.
Wormeries (Vermicomposting)
Wormeries use composting worms to break down food scraps quickly into a rich, nutrient-dense product known as worm castings — prized by growers for boosting plant health. They’re ideal for small spaces, flats, or indoor use.

Leaf mould
Leaf mould is simply decomposed leaves — slow to make but incredibly valuable for improving soil structure, water retention, and seed-sowing mixes. It requires almost no effort and can be created in its own dedicated cage or pile.
