Wildlife surveys and bio blitz

Why do a wildlife survey?

If you're going to make changes to your garden or greenspace then finding out what’s already there is a good start! It can help you decide what to do and then how successful your project has been. Your wildlife records could also help scientific research and inform government policy and local planning decisions.

Here are some ideas for how to go about it:

1. Start recording what you see

If you have a smartphone the iRecord app helps you to identify and record what you see and where. The Merlin Bird ID app is also useful to identify birds based on their call.

2. See what’s already around

  • Search national record centres to find animal and plant records.
  • Local Biodiversity action plans will tell you what experts value most about Lanarkshire’s wildlife and wild places.

     3. Run a community event such as a bioblitz

    What is a bioblitz?

A Bioblitz is a fun, informal event that gives you a snapshot of what’s about. Local people come together with experts and wildlife enthusiasts to record wildlife. The National Bioblitz Network takes you through how to organise one, including free resources. It is a great way to start getting people interested in your greenspace.
