Retrofit support in Lanarkshire
North and South Lanarkshire Councils
If you're a homeowner or private tenant in North or South Lanarkshire, you may be able to get free or discounted help to make your home warmer and more energy efficient through government-backed schemes.
There are two main schemes that could help you:
ECO4 (Energy Company Obligation)
- Helps improve homes that are cold and expensive to heat.
- Aimed at people who are on low incomes or struggling with energy costs.
- Can include multiple improvements like insulation, heating systems, and ventilation upgrades.
GBIS (Great British Insulation Scheme)
- Focuses mainly on insulation (like loft or wall insulation).
- Also supports people with high energy bills or low household income.
Both schemes run until March 2026.
Each scheme has a "Flex" version, which gives your local council more say in deciding who qualifies.
This means more people could be eligible, even if they don’t get certain benefits.
- ECO4 Flex and GBIS Flex allow North and South Lanarkshire Councils to recommend additional households for help, based on government rules.
- The Council checks if you qualify – but the energy supplier chooses what improvements are made.
These schemes aim to:
- Help people stay warm.
- Lower energy bills.
- Improve home energy ratings (EPC ratings).
- Support the UK’s goals for net zero carbon emissions.
What should I do?
If you:
- Are struggling with high energy bills
- Live in a cold or hard-to-heat home
- Have a low income or health conditions affected by the cold
You might qualify for free help.
- All potentially eligible households wishing to take advantage of the scheme should apply through Home Energy Scotland or a contractor approved to work within North or South Lanarkshire to see if they can benefit from the scheme or be assessed for eligibility under another relevant programme. If contacting a contractor directly make sure they are approved under the TrustMark scheme.
