What is the Climate Action Mentorship Grant?

Starting a new project can be hard. Learning from someone with the right knowledge and experience can help see your project off to a good start. The Climate Action Mentorship Grant is a funded support scheme designed to enable Lanarkshire groups to take climate action and gain valuable experience in project planning and delivery in partnership with an established mentor group.

Who is it for?

Perhaps you’re a newly formed group looking to kickstart your first project, or maybe you have an idea to take climate action in your community, but don’t know where to start. You may have even identified or applied for funding but need help developing, adapting or delivering your project to meet the funder's criteria.

The scheme is available to Lanarkshire community groups, and we are particularly keen to hear from newly formed groups, groups who want to integrate climate action into their existing activities, or those who have faced challenges developing projects or applying for funding in the past.

Please note that schools and nurseries are not eligible for this grant.

Mentees

If you’ve got an idea for a climate action project but aren’t sure where to start, or if you’ve hit a barrier you can’t get past, this grant is for you. You’ll be matched with an experienced local group who can share practical advice, lessons and real-life experience to help you move forward. Whether it’s setting up a project, finding funding, engaging volunteers or figuring out next steps, you’ll get tailored support focused on what you need. All we ask is that you come with an idea of what you want to learn, stay engaged throughout, and are open to trying new approaches. By the end of the mentorship, you’ll have new skills, greater confidence, new connections, and a clear plan for your project’s next steps.

Mentors

If you’re an experienced community group or organisation, this is a great opportunity to share your knowledge and support other groups while strengthening your own impact. As a mentor, you’ll work with a local group to help them overcome challenges by offering guidance, sharing your experience, and providing practical insights into what works (and perhaps more importantly, what doesn’t). The support you offer can be flexible depending on the project – from informal chats to workshops, site visits and hands-on learning sessions. Your time is fully compensated through the grant, and you’ll also benefit from building new partnerships, raising your profile, and contributing to wider climate action in Lanarkshire. We ask that you’re open, communicative, and responsive, and willing to support mentees in a constructive and encouraging way. You’ll come away with stronger networks, potential future collaborators, and valuable evidence for your own work.

What does a Climate Action Mentorship look like?

Hill Start - Bike Reuse and Cycling Hub

Through partnership with an established community cycling organisation, a local tenants and residents group were able to start up their own bike reuse and cycling hub, upskilling their own volunteers and partner organisations, to provide free bike maintenance services and access to recycled bikes for local residents.

At a community cycling event funded by Lanarkshire Climate Action Hub, Hillhouse Residents & Tenants Association identified access to bikes and maintenance services as barriers to cycling in the area.

Gear Up - a community cycling organisation with experience in bike maintenance and repairs - shared their skills and knowledge by arranging visits to their workshop, helping order and build components for the new bike reuse hub, supporting with the required paperwork, and ensuring the group complied with all of the relevant health and safety requirements and had the necessary insurance. Additional support was given with regards to available funding and resources available to community groups, allowing access to storage containers and a fleet of children’s bikes for the site.

These details can often be difficult to navigate for groups starting a project from scratch, but with Gear Up’s expert guidance, Hillhouse Residents & Tenants were able to get their own bike project, Hill Start, up and running in the community in under a year.

Chair Hooray Project - Upcycling chairs

The chairs in Cambuslang Youth Commitee's community space had seen better days and were in a state of disrepairs - old, worn and in need of some care and attention.

To learn how to restore the chairs, Cambuslang Youth Committee worked in partnership with the local preloved project Revolve Recycle. Through engaging workshops, the young people of Cambuslang Youth Committee learnt how to sew, patchwork and various upcycling techniques. The team now has the skills to be able to take on other upcycling projects.

What support and funding is available?

Lanarkshire Climate Action Hub will support you throughout the mentorship process by helping match you with the right partner, facilitating planning meetings, and offering access to our resources and networks. We’ll check in regularly to make sure everything is running smoothly, help troubleshoot any challenges, and connect you to further training or funding opportunities where relevant. We’ll also support you in capturing your learning and sharing your story to inspire others.

A maximum budget of £1000 is available for each mentorship, with a maximum of £750 going directly to the mentor group to cover time and expenses, and a maximum of £250 to be used for any materials and expenses required to deliver your project including the delivery of an event or activity. You cannot include for costs already incurred and items or equipment of a personal nature. We may ask for evidence of what you have spent the money on so please retain receipts and records of expenditure.

When to apply?

Applications are open now and will be reviewed monthly from 20 April 2026 until funding is fully subscribed. We anticipate this grant will be popular, so early submission is advised to avoid disappointment.
