Join Lanarkshire Climate Action Hub and Black Mount Community Development Trust for the Growing Biggar summer celebration!
Come along to the third event in the Growing Biggar series. Taking place at Black Mount Community Garden, during this event we will be swapping plants, sharing our favourite seasonal recipes and talk about our experiences of growing the Biggar vegetable (broad beans)! It is also an opportunity to look around the community garden and see the Black Mount's beautifully decorated seed library.
What to expect on the day:
This session is a celebration of community growing and eating seasonally.
- Bring along extra plants to swap with others
- Share your favourite seasonal recipes - from beetroot brownies to broad bean hummus!
- Discuss your experience of food growing this year - the challenges and successes
- Activities for children
- Plus more!
Everyone is invited to bring along some food to share - we will bring the tea, coffee and biscuits!
Please note that toilet facilities and car parking will be available at Elsrickle Community Hub on the day. See below for more details.
This is a family-friendly event and for anyone who grows - or would like to grow - food in Biggar and the surrounding areas! All levels of experience are welcome. You don't need to have attended the previous sessions to come along.
🌱 What is Growing Biggar? 🌱
Growing Biggar is a series of four seasonal gatherings taking place in February, April, July and October 2026.
The series looks to:
- Reflect on experiences, challenges and aspirations for local food growing
- Support relationship-building and knowledge sharing between growers
- Create artwork which will form part of a public art installation during Biggar Little Festival in October 2026
At previous Growing Biggar events we have worked with local artist Hamshya Rajkumar to discuss why we grow food and the challenges we face, and we have created a collage zine exploring qualities we love about the Biggar vegetable, colours, shapes and memories, and our hopes for this project.
About the Artist:
Hamshya Rajkumar is an interdisciplinary artist, urban ecologist and seed librarian with a deep interest in climate-adapted vegetables as a community-held practice.
Hamshya’s work combines site-specific movement and visual arts, focusing on ‘disturbed’ green spaces — from post-industrial landscapes to gardens. Over the past two years, she has worked as a Seed Librarian specialising in community engagement at the Glasgow Seed Library.
Hamshya recently completed an MSc in Wildlife Biology & Conservation, researching soil samples connected to a rare plant adaptation at the former Ravenscraig steelworks site. This research grew from her artistic practice, which has been exhibited with tine collective at A Fragile Correspondence (Scotland + Venice Architecture Biennale 2023) and at V&A Dundee (2024).
Black Mount Community Development Trust:
Black Mount Community Development Trust (BMCDT) was established in March 2023 and became a registered charity in May 2025. We're run by a volunteer board of five trustees, backed by over 42 members, and we exist to bring people together and make Black Mount a great place to live, in Clydesdale, South Lanarkshire.
We organise events and projects throughout the year, like our Community Fun Day, family-friendly cycle events, the Seed Library, and our Community Tool Library, working alongside residents, local groups and partners to support what matters to people here. Whether it's a fun day out, a practical skill-share, or improving a shared space, it's all about building connection and resilience across our villages.

Accessing the venue:
Black Mount Community Garden is located within the grounds of Black Mount Primary School, Elsrickle, Biggar, ML12 6QZ. There is step-free access with flat paths throughout. The garden area has a slight incline.
Toilet facilities will be available on the day across the road at Elsrickle Community Hub.
Travel:
Black Mount Primary School is located on the main street in Elsrickle which is not served by public transport. Nearest bus is the Houston 101 Edinburgh to Biggar. The closest stops would be Erringtons Barn or Candymill, followed by a 1.7-2.2mi walk on roads with no pavements.
There is a small car park across the road at Elsrickle Community Hub (ML12 6QZ) and on street parking is permitted on the day.
Bikes can be kept in the car park.
